MY STORY

I’m Courtney, though I assume you’ve already reached that conclusion, clever you ;) . You may be wondering why an English language instructor is presenting herself as a scholarly Morticia Addams who’s enamoured with all things dark. There is an origin to this story, so get comfortable.

In 2008, I moved to Europe from Canada, and several years later I started teaching English as a foreign language. What should have been a natural unfolding of events was actually a delayed process, marked by a generous serving of doubt, and the occasional existential crisis.

After far too many internal arguments, I was ready to admit that I was unhappy working in a corporate environment. From that point onward I trained, studied, and became certified as an English instructor, equipped with enough knowledge and optimism to turn this experience into something worthwhile. My teaching experience began in the heart of Tuscany, where I became a full-time instructor to students who needed help improving their English.

Working with students was -- and continues to be -- the most fulfilling work I've done to date. Alongside my passion for teaching, I nurtured a keen fascination for all things spooky, mysterious, and thought-provoking. To my pleasant surprise, as I shared these intriguing topics with my students, an unexpected connection blossomed.

Their enthusiasm became contagious, and I was inspired to write more of my own lessons which blended my student’s academic needs with our shared interests in world events, the paranormal, and all manner of things dark and mysterious. Aside from indulging our shared interests, the lessons I crafted had the added effect of guiding each of us to see the world through a different lens.

Soon, my pupils not only saw significant improvements in their grades, but also developed the confidence to express their views on many captivating subjects, all in English – Bravo ragazzi! I now reside in Croatia, but my love of teaching – and for the multitude of things relevant to this world, or just plain spooky – has never diminished.
